In-class Discussion

  1. Self-Efficacy

I love to read. Writing, though, has it's difficulties. When I'm writing in a journal, I let my mind go where ever it wants. I could write my personal feelings down without any problems, because I know that I am the only person who can see these writings.
I'm afraid to write because I am very self-conscience. While discussing Nemat's writing in class today, I felt intimidated. I didn't know the little specific details that made the short excerpt so significant. Of course I picked up on the obvious ones, but how do I find that one thread to continue throughout my own narrative?
Self-efficacy is important because all people need to know that they can be creative. We all need to be able to write or read without caring what others think. How can you go wrong? By reading and writing, we can only benefit ourselves. I plan to achieve self-efficacy by writing drafts or ideas for my narrative when I feel the urge to write in my journal. These are the times that I feel the most creative which can only help when I begin to write my literacy narrative.

  2. Show, don't tell.

My object is smooth. Shaped like a small cylinder with an odd shaped end. The majority of it is white, crisp and clean. The unusual end is a bright, royal blue. It is made of plastic which reflects the overhead lights. My object is a whiteboard marker. The end that is shaped differently is the cap, and when you remove it, it makes a "click" sound, which is the same sound heard when replacing it. On one curved side of the marker is bold black lettering. How does this relate to writing? Without this marker, students would have less guidance. A marker like mine is used for writing messages for other to read. It provides communication. If Professor Piro had not used a marker similar to the one in my hand, the entire class would not know what to write about. When a message is written with dry-erase markers, there must be an audience, or people who will read it. Again, this provides communication. Every classroom has a marker like mine if there is a whiteboard present.

  3. The hall was quiet until she heard...

The hall was quiet until she heard a loud scream, coming from the vicinity of the gymnasium. It was a girl’s voice, just one short shriek that sounded deadly. The school was quiet, the best time to study according to Vanessa. Everyone had gone home; teachers closed up the rooms and locked the doors. The only occasional noises were those of the night shift janitors working away. She was in the basement of the old, outdated building. This spot, across from the choir room in a small hidden hallway, had become Vanessa’s personal escape. Somewhere she could go to alienate herself from the outside world of bullies and drama. Often times, this is where she did her homework, but more recently it was a place for just thinking. Her mother wouldn’t notice her tardiness; she had enough to worry about. She was always more caught up with Vanessa’s four younger siblings anyway. Today, Vanessa came to her little piece of serenity to reflect on the week’s activities. For once in her life, she had chosen to try to live up to her mother’s standards. All of the other children in her family were athletic, but those coordinated jeans must have skipped Vanessa. She was the bookworm; she studied hard and always valued her time at school. Going out on a limb though, Vanessa decided to try out for the cheerleading team.

  4. How I Met Your Mother

How do I feel about the video? I liked it, probably because I enjoy watching "How I Met Your Mother" during my free time. When the video began, I was reminded of a story I read my senior year of high school. I wish I could remember the name of it. The main character of the story is laid up in his bedroom and eventually becomes obsessed with a suspected murder in his neighbor's home... I hate Star Wars. I've watched bits and pieces of the movies and they have never been appealing to me. I can't imagine sitting down and watching all three movies in a row. I like how the episode showed character development, even in Barney who said he'd never change. If this were the first time watching this show, it would be easy for me to understand who the characters are and what their relationships are like. While watching the video, I was wondering what revelance it had to our next writing assignment. If we are going to be writing about our futures, I think I will enjoy it. I've written about my future plans before, and it's fun to think about where I will be in ten years. I thought the video was funny with a serious undertone.
